This extremely rare Steinway & Sons, 'Model Z' Upright Piano manufactured in in Hamburg, Germany has just landed at our Adelaide store; an extremely rare find in Australia, we have seen 2 of these pianos in 30 years.
The Steinway & Sons ‘Model Z’ was only manufactured between 1961-1979 to service the growing mid-century styled furniture designs of the time. Famously purchased by John Lennon & Yoko Ono, they used their own ‘Model Z’ to write ‘Imagine’. That particular piano was later sold at auction in 1992 for 2.37 million dollars to George Michael, the lead singer of Wham. The piano is now on loan and on display at the Beatles Story Museum in Liverpool, England.
Besides a fantastic back story, the Model Z is a fantastic compact sized instrument. With its smooth and responsive Renner action and keyboard, to its high quality German Steinway frame and scale design. This particular piano has aged beautifully, it has a beautiful presence and powerful sound for its size with its perfect balance between brilliant and soft notes – as only a high quality German Steinway & Sons Piano can produce.
Previously owned by a private customer of ours, the piano in absolutely beautiful original condition having remained in the same family home since new. Since receiving the piano we have conducted a restoration of the exterior Chestnut cabinet, playing mechanism and keyboard. The piano looks beautiful, plays perfecty and is fully regulated and tuned to A440 concert pitch.
